Exercise Physiology

What is Exercise Physiology?

Accredited exercise physiologists (AEPs) are allied health professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities. Pathology domains covered by the services of AEPs include cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, musculoskeletal, cancers, kidney, respiratory / pulmonary and mental health, and any other conditions for which there is evidence that exercise can improve the client’s clinical status.

An exercise physiologist will engage in a throughout tailored assessment to determine your diagnosis, signs/symptoms and general problems and then engage in creating a tailored treatment program to assist you with your individual problems and achieve your goals. This may include improving your strength/function after a workplace injury/motor vehicle accident, conducting workplace assessments/functional assessments. Helping gain strength/function following any neurological problems such as a stroke + much more.

FAQ's

Accredited exercise physiologists work across a range of health settings including public and private hospitals, private and multidisciplinary clinics, government and not-for profit organisations, workplace health and rehabilitation, aged care facilities, fitness centres, gymnasiums and sports organisations.

There are a wide range of reasons why a person may benefit from consulting an accredited exercise physiologist. These include chronic disease management referrals after diagnosis of a range of conditions including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Metabolic disease
  • Neurological disease
  • Musculoskeletal disease (including arthritis, osteoporosis/osteopenia, acute and/or chronic musculoskeletal issues)
  • Depression and other mental health conditions
  • Cancer
  • Assessments of functional capacity
  • Advice on lifestyle modification to improve health status
  • Rehabilitation post work injury
  • Rehabilitation post motor vehicle accident
  • Rehabilitation post gym injury
  • Rehabilitation post sports injury (etc. ankle sprain, acl injury)
  • Exercise prescriptions for strength and function improvement pre- and post-surgery
  • Workplace assessments.

Knee, leg and foot injuries are also common in car accidents. Drivers not wearing a seat-belt sometimes push their knees towards the dashboard, injuring their lower legs upon impact. When recovering from broken bones or soft-tissue damage in the lower limb, it is important that you regain strength and follow a personalized treatment approach for optimal recovery.
